The direct inkjet printing technology

The direct inkjet printing technology

The direct inkjet printing technology will make it possible to eliminate the label printing on expensive self-adhesive and other not so expensive materials, as well as to eliminate further technologically very complicated processes of labeling and application of additional information about the product. In one run, a multicolor image, all logos and texts, including variable expiration dates, etc., are printed on the surface of a bottle or container. The idea of the technology is feasible, but in what areas is it applicable?

It should be noted that the technology bottle direct printing and other items are not new: for example the widely popular machines dry offset, screen and pad printing, which are used to decorate not only packaging but also souvenirs, tableware and more. And in recent years, manufacturers of large-format plotters (equipment for printing promotional posters, etc.) are also invading this niche: some offer desktop flatbed printers for inkjet printing on a variety of items, but with restrictions on dimensions, especially height.

Some time ago in the market there were also similar devices for the inkjet printing on the cylindrical objects, using the same principle of the reciprocating motion of the block of inkjet heads along the axis of slowly rotating in the centers of the cylindrical object, such as tubes or bottles.

Progress is ongoing, and real prototypes of industrial equipment for direct full-colour inkjet printing on bottles have already appeared, which aspire to replace conventional labels. According to the manufacturers’ opinion the use of such digital label printing machines will allow to dramatically reduce the time for introduction of new products to the market: if today the time for label production from design approval to run, labeling and shipment of the finished product is 12-14 weeks, with direct ink-jet printing on packaging it will be reduced by several times. Production is becoming much more flexible and responsive in terms of new products, small runs and especially promotional batches, which brand owners are increasingly keen on. Obviously, the use of label material – film or paper, glue – is eliminated, printing, logistics and storage costs are reduced, and waste is virtually eliminated – the very first print can be full-fledged.
