How to do label winding correctly

Label Structure

Labels consist of a sequence of fields for applying information, fixed on a strip. The front side of the label is made from paper or polymers (PP, PET, vinyl) and can be white or multicolored. To enhance the durability of the labels, they are coated with varnish.

Thermal labels contain a temperature-sensitive layer that darkens upon heating. Thermal transfer labels are colored using a ribbon.

On the reverse of the front side, adhesive is applied. This sticky coating is an integral part of the label. Such stickers are called self-adhesive. Adhesion to packaging is ensured by all-temperature, frost-resistant, rubber, and acrylic compositions. Adhesives are also distinguished between permanent and removable.

The backing (liner) protects the adhesive coating of the label from drying out, allowing for organized storage of the labeling. The base is most often a polyethylene terephthalate film or kraft paper with a wax glossy layer. The label easily peels off the backing without losing flatness. Liners are quite flexible, yet very strong. They freely wrap around the core and roll up into rolls. Winding the label on a cardboard cylinder during label production ensures the integrity of the label until it is applied to the product.

Main Roll Parameters

In addition to the dimensional size of the label when choosing stickers, the following factors are considered:

  • Core Diameter. The standard sleeve size is 40 and 76 mm. A sleeve for winding labels with a diameter of 26 cm is intended for mobile printers. Labels on sleeves are made to order. For industrial production, you can buy labels on sleeves of 101 mm.
  • Outer Diameter of the Roll. Depends on the number of stickers in the bundle. This parameter allows determining the compatibility of the roll with a specific type of equipment, assessing the speed of labeling work.
  • Number of Lanes. Indicates the number of stickers in one row. In the roll, there can be from 1 to 5 lanes.
  • Type of Label Winding. Determines the direction of the tape through the printer’s print head. The mark IN indicates that the field for applying information is located inside the roll, OUT— outside.
  • Winding Scheme. Can be external, internal, up to the right or left, back or forward. Marked with letters and numbers from 1 to 8 (see the scheme).

Equipment for printing, rewinding, or applying labels works with labeling compatible with all listed parameters. The only conditional criterion is the outer diameter of the roll. Practically any size can be used if the sleeve for winding labels is installed on an external holder.

The roll is inserted into the printer or installed on an external holder, which is located next to the printing machine or sticker line. Fixation in the printer protects the labeling from contamination, ensures stable tension of the label tape for printing, but increases the time to change the sleeve.

Optional equipment simplifies the reloading of rolls, reduces the frequency of replacing bundles, and generally increases the speed of label production. External holders are indispensable if it is necessary to print or apply a large edition of stickers to products in the shortest possible time. They are released in the form of stands and mechanical equipment.

What Can Be the Winding of Labels on an External Holder
External holders are a stand that clamps the sleeve from both sides. Designed to feed the tape into the printer. The stand does not regulate the tension of the winding of labels in the roll, which creates the prerequisites for jamming the sticker or violating the accuracy of printing positioning. External holders fit sleeves of different diameters, compatible with most models of flexographic and thermal transfer printers.

The main material of manufacture of the external holder is plastic. For this reason, the maximum carrying capacity of the dispenser is limited, depending on the model, from 500 to 1000 grams. Design flaws and limited functionality of external holders are compensated by low price and ease of use of devices for winding labels.

Rewinders roll up tapes with applied labeling into bundles for sticker lines or manual sticking of labels. Rewinders allow dividing the spool into smaller batches. At the same time, the winding of labels in the roll is performed on a sleeve or without it.

All three types of devices have a reinforced body capable of withstanding the packaging of labeling of significant weight. Equipment of any category consists of a motor, speed switch, sleeve fixator, and internal flange, which regulates the rolling of the bundle without disturbing the flatness of the label.

Functionally, the label rewinder provides maximum tape feed speed at the top lever position. The rewinder, on the other hand, is turned off in this position. Combined models are encountered, in which the possibility of switching modes is provided.

Label Winding

The roll is installed on a metal pin with a vertical or horizontal position. In some models, a clamping mechanism is provided. Devices for working with large weight bundles are recommended to be retrofitted with a fixing drum and additional support.

By Design Features

Right- and left-sided, single- and two-axis holders are distinguished. Devices are also highlighted with manual lever start and pedal drive. The throughput capacity of the equipment reaches 1250 m/s.
